"Pamphilia to Amphilanthus": Lady Mary Wroth
Return
Lady Wroth was educated by her uncle, Philip sidney.
It was extremely unusual for a woman to be
highly educated, able to read and write. In fact, it
is likely that Lady Wroth was the most educated woman
in England at this time. Thus Lady Wroth could be
thought of as a "bas bleu" (a bluestocking:
intellectual woman), an early feminist.
"Pamphilia to Amphilanthus" by Lady Mary Wroth consists of
six sonnets, followed by a song, repeated several times.
A song is composed of a vriable number of lines:
16, 20, 24, 28, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, etc.
6 octets song 1 = 48 lines
Sonnets 1 - 6; then Song 1 (6 octets): 6x14 + 6x8 = 84 + 48 = 132 lines
